About New Jozi
Why we opened.
"Rotterdam has so many great roasters. We wanted one place where you could try them all."
New Jozi opened on Jonker Fransstraat in December 2025. The idea was simple: put bags from four Rotterdam roasters — Manhattan, Schot, Shokunin and Mellow — on the wall, roast a house blend of our own called Viola, and let people order any of them as a drink at the bar. Add a kitchen that takes brunch seriously. Stay small. Keep the lineup rotating.
Six people. one bar.
- Lionel & Dave — Co-founders
Lionel runs the coffee, Dave runs the kitchen. They opened New Jozi to bring Rotterdam's best beans and best brunch under one roof. Before New Jozi, they both enjoyed corporate careers in MNCs, but the call to adventure was too strong. They both love serving people and seeing community being built through hospitality. The dream is for New Jozi to become a place in the city where authentic community thrives and where everyone feels safe and welcome. Excellent food and serving the best specialty coffees we can find are an essential part of this vision. - Michael — Head Barista
Brings his own coffee equipment to the bar. Will talk to you about coffee all day long. Ask Michal about anything about brewing V60 like a pro. - Sofia — Barista
Makes a great cappuccino, incredibly friendly, always happy. Brings the best Brazilian playlist to the shop. Ask Sofia about her favourite coffee beans or about her cats - she's excited to talk to you about either! - Leo — Barista
When she's not making her signature "Aerocano" she loves experimenting with new recipes for specialty drinks. Ask her about her experience learning and speaking Dutch or her numerous special home remedies. - Oskar — Head of Kitchen
When Oskars not cooking up a storm in the kitchen he's creating sick beats or attending music - Daniel — Cook
Daniels passion for cooking shows up in his experimentation. When he's not working at New Jozi he's lost in his passion for music and sound production - Myrthe — Trainee Barista
Myrthe is a fitness fanatic and ran her first Rotterdam Marathon in 2026. She never runs out of energy and loves being around and serving people.
How we work
- Specialty, not snobbery. — We love this stuff, but we won't lecture you. If you want oat milk, you get oat milk — no eye-rolls.
- Local first. — Every bean comes from a Rotterdam roaster. Every supplier is someone we've met.
- Slow down. — We don't do to-go cups. Drink it here, watch the street, take twenty minutes for yourself.
